Shave like your grandpa! I went old school and it is awesome. I’ve been using the razor and blades below for a few months now. I love the shave.
Dollar shave club will cost you $3 a month for their cheapest option and you get 5 blades a month. Even if you buy a new handle every year (why?) and use 5 blades per month, the set below costs $1.29 a month. Even if you change your blade twice a week, $9 for a years worth of blades is super cheap.
The pack of blades will last me years since I just shave my neck and cheeks.

Alternately, you can spend hundreds of dollars on a quality straight razor and strop and never need a new blade, while freaking the fuck out of literally everybody. #OldSchoolVSOlderSchool

Disposable razors are stupid expensive (that’s why they lock them up at night at the grocery store), but I shave so seldom that I think I get my money’s worth out of them. I’ve never tried the old school razors. How long do they keep their edge?

I have to agree here, I’ve been using a DE razor for the last 6 months and have had the best shaves, less razor burn, and spent less money then I would have with using my old Fusion Proglide. I’ll never go back, I even converted a friend of mine and he’s a believer.

Yea, I was not at all impressed with the blades from dollar shave club, and I went with the fancy ones. Safety razors are awesome, I’ve got a Merkur long handle.

That’s the thing - one Fusion cartridge last me about half a year, but I’m still looking to ditch them after I use my last one and go for the Dorco razors (same as Dollar Shave Club) or the fancy-ass Harry’s razors.
Since I have horribly uneven facial hair growth, I just have to shave a little bit of stubble on my chin and upper lip. It's also nice just to be able to do this in 30 seconds while I'm in the shower.

I spend about $2/mo on Gillette Good News razors (2-3 per month). In other words, no incentive to change. But if you’re coming from the Schick 6-blade Ultrafellatio Xtreme where blades are $3 each, it can help a lot.

Holy shit, I didn’t know you could get these in Damascus-style blades. I know I'd fuck up by bringing it in my dopp kit and getting it confiscated by airport security.

I use one of these, its the best of both worlds http://www.amazon.com/Parker-SR1-Sta…

I’m not the best judge of that. I don’t shave every day, and just my neck and cheeks. Some argue that the quality of the blade is better than the blades used in the modern cartridges. I’ve used one blade for over a month and changed it out just because I had a drawer full of them. I did notice the new one was sharper, but the old one was still shaving well.

I prefer the straight razor with replaceable blades. It is the best of both worlds. http://www.amazon.com/Parker-SR1-Sta…

I considered it! But, ultimately I was too cheap to try one out.

I shave my head and face with a Parker 99R DE razor and it’s easily the best shave I’ve ever had. Never going to back to disposables.

Very nice. I assume the blades are 440C, because you can actually heat treat that properly. It’s not quite a substitute for a really well made carbon steel blade in terms of blade longevity, but going without a need for cleaning and blade oiling probably makes up for that - that and having replaceable blades.

four years now for me. havent had razor burn since. i used to get razor burn after EVERY shave back when i was using a cartridge ( note, im indian and have a very coarse beard)

Even cheaper, don’t shave.

That’s where I am. I love the tech, but learning how to use it, spending money on it, getting it right, taking care of the blade... it’s a level of hipsterism I have not attempted to climb to yet.

I shave maybe once a week. But those cartridges do get dull pretty quick (Though not as quickly as those Bic disposables. If I’ve got a thick bit of stubble to remove, it can take three or four of those terrible things). I can make a 5-pack of cartridges last a month or more.

it depends. There are a few tricks to make them stay sharp a really long time. Putting oil on the blade between uses is a big one, and a mild stropping of even disposable blades makes them go a lot longer. I will usually run the blade backwards down my arm a few times just to clean off the edge, and that seems to do the trick.

If you go this way, I recommend you up your shave game. Get a nice brush and shaving soap, a merkur razor and a pack of assorted blades to find one you prefer. Also, be warned that these are super sharp. You may need to relearn how to shave.

I haven’t tried safety razors like a Murkur yet.
I use my Norelco rotary or Dorco Pace 6 if I haven’t shaved in a week. Used to be a slave to the Gillette corp. till the quality didn’t match the price.

I go for the wolfman look myself.

My beard is also quite course, even using a DE blade I can only use it twice at the most before it is simply not sharp enough. I use Feather blades and have tried many others but at the price point I can ditch the blade after the second shave and not care.

Some people have good a looking natural beard shape. My beard is sparse and scraggly on my neck, so off it goes. Shave completely and I get carded everywhere.
![]() 11/18/2015 at 10:29 |

I just use a beard trimmer for shaping.

Do the blades rust? I usually keep my razor in the shower.

Probably would if left in the shower. But so does a regular razor, doesn’t it? My wife leaves her cartridge style razor in the shower and it leaves a rust stain if it is face down.

They blades are whatever you want to buy. It takes standard half razor blades. The only problem is I have had it for 3 years and haven’t finished my first pack of 25, so I have not tried any other kinds yet. I was going to get a real razor, but was in college and wasn’t sure I would be able to keep it from getting destroyed in a fraternity house.
![]() 11/18/2015 at 10:37 |

I use an electric razor. It only tugs when I’ve been lazy and haven’t shaved for a week or two. Still running strong with its original blades and I’ve been using it for about 5 years. I’m only recently beginning to consider buying a new one.
Oh, and I don’t use Lectric Shave or whatever. I did at first, but I don’t think it makes a difference. So that’s even more savings this way.
The only downside is you really need to shower immediately afterward every time. No shaving cream means the little bits of hair just stay on your face until you wash them off.

I was gonna say: “Shave like your professor: Don’t.”

you’d be surprised how hard you would have to try to bring it up in conversation to show off your hipsterism. And if you can’t show off your hipsterism, whats the point?
![]() 11/18/2015 at 10:45 |

The other option to bringing it up in conversation is carrying it around in your laptop bag or otherwise being very obvious. And/or being the psycho who takes it out and meaningfully shaves his arm during meetings or classes, or plays with it like a butterfly knife.
![]() 11/18/2015 at 10:45 |

I tried an old style razor for about a year. They seem initially much sharper. They seem to work well for at least a week. I think you could easily get 2 or more weeks out of a blade. I also have a beard so I only shave my neck and cheeks.
![]() 11/18/2015 at 10:47 |

with how delicate the edge is, and how expensive a good one is, that is a seriously dumb move, and like you said psycho.
![]() 11/18/2015 at 10:51 |

My point is, there are two reasons for letting everybody know you have a straight razor. One of which is MY HIPSTERDOM IS MIGHTIER THAN YOURS. The other is:
They’re not completely exclusive, but they might as well be.
![]() 11/18/2015 at 10:51 |
|
I didn’t know about that type. How did I miss that? I can even use the blades I’ve got with it. You just snap them in half.
![]() 11/18/2015 at 10:54 |

I’ll stick with my Fusion blades, thanks. A single pack of those can last me close to a year or so anyways since I shave like twice a week.
![]() 11/18/2015 at 10:56 |

Does your wife buy cheap cartridges? They’re supposed to be stainless steel blades, I’ve never had mine rust.
![]() 11/18/2015 at 11:09 |

An electric razor is non-stop train to razor-burn city for me. and I’ll still have random hairs that get missed.
![]() 11/18/2015 at 11:32 |

Gotcha. BTW, your wife should get one of these bad boys:
I’ve never had a problem with rust on Gillette razors.
![]() 11/18/2015 at 11:32 |

it’s a suction cup razor holder, if the pic doesn’t show up.
![]() 11/18/2015 at 11:37 |

I’ve been using the same disposable razor for about 6 months or so. I don’t know what people are talking about with this getting dull stuff. I get a clean shave every morning and a sanitize it after.
Long live cheap ass disposables!

Wetshave for life.. yo!
I’ve got five vintage Gillettes I rotate through; 1960s red tip, blue tip, superspeed, brasilia superspeed. and a 1906 flare tip..
For blades Feathers are my favourite, followed by Persona Reds.. one (two sided) blade usually lasts a month (shaving every other day). It’s a little rough at the end but new blades are oh so sharp.
Go to Badger&Blade and get an old Gillette, then go to Bullgoose, buy a DE preferred (56 blades) sampler for $16 and find your brand. Then buy a 100 box of them.
All in I’ve paid less than $40 for all five razors, and maybe $40 for the 200+ blades I’ve got. I started wetshaving 5 years ago and haven’t had to buy new blades yet.
I’ve got three straights as well, but they scare me..

I wet shave also. The shave is so close I have cut myself down to 2-3 shaves a week. Also, great websites for people that don’t know:

I’ve never understood how to shave with a safety razor, but watching this video really cleared it up for me.
